Romantic comedy codes and conventions

Romantic comedies share codes and conventions from both romance and comedy genres.
One aspect that romantic comedies have are that they are typically focused on the female character. This is apparent in films such as Bridget Jones's Diary where even the film cover and title is centred around the female in the film.
The film normally ends in the two protagonists being in a relationship, to create the happy ending which is common in the romance genre, this helps reflect the characters' fulfilment to the audience.  The comedy side of the film is normally portrayed through the use of innuendos which help create the comedy aspect, which allows the audience to open up to more then just the stereotypical audience of a romance film.
Romance films portray the romance aspect throughout the film by using things such as flowers, hearts and colours such as red and pink. This is because it is representative of love and relationships, they are also stereotypically feminine colours, which help portray this, for example, red hearts or pink flowers.
The storyline similarly contain an argument or disagreement which sends the characters in separate directions, however, they typically reunite afterwards. This means that the films creates the feeling of pain or "failure to victory". Some of these feelings can be presented through flashbacks or stories about the past where feelings can develop through knowing what the characters went through, which increases the connection between the audience and the character. The connection between the audience and the characters can also be developed through the situation that the characters find themselves in which are typically easily relatable, this makes the audience feel connected to the characters because they see themselves and see how the situation is resolved.
The setting of romantic comedies are typically well known cities or in the urban are, where most people live, this helps the audience connect to the characters as if the characters live in the same place as them then they feel like they are not alone in the situation that they are currently facing in real life.
The comedy aspect is presented throughout because it allows the audience to escape what situations they are facing in real life it allows the audience to laugh and even see the brighter side of their situation.
